LEITURA Bíblia Sagrada     Versão - João Ferreira de Almeida - 2ª edição PT-BR King James Version Gênesis 20 Mateus  19 Neemias 9 LEITURA  19 º DIA  ..... ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦  ..... ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦  Gênesis 20 1 Partindo Abraão dali para a terra do Neguebe, habitou entre Cades e Sur e morou em Gerar. 2 Disse Abraão de Sara, sua mulher: Ela é minha irmã; assim, pois, Abimeleque, rei de Gerar, mandou buscá-la. 3 Deus, porém, veio a Abimeleque em sonhos de noite e lhe disse: Vais ser punido de morte por causa da mulher que tomaste, porque ela tem marido. 4 Ora, Abimeleque ainda não a havia possuído; por isso, disse: Senhor, matarás até uma nação inocente? 5 Não foi ele mesmo que me disse: É minha irmã? E ela também me disse: Ele é meu irmão. Com sinceridade de coração e na minha inocência, foi que eu fiz isso. 6 Respondeu-lhe Deus em sonho: Bem sei que com sinceridade de coração fizeste isso; daí o ter impedido eu de pecares contra mim e não te permiti que a tocasses. 7 Agora, pois, restitui a mulher a seu marido, pois ele é profeta e intercederá por ti, e viverás; se, porém, não lha restituíres, sabe que certamente morrerás, tu e tudo o que é teu. 8 Levantou-se Abimeleque de madrugada, e chamou todos os seus servos, e lhes contou todas essas coisas; e os homens ficaram muito atemorizados. 9 Então, chamou Abimeleque a Abraão e lhe disse: Que é isso que nos fizeste? Em que pequei eu contra ti, para trazeres tamanho pecado sobre mim e sobre o meu reino? Tu me fizeste o que não se deve fazer. 10 Disse mais Abimeleque a Abraão: Que estavas pensando para fazeres tal coisa? 11 Respondeu Abraão: Eu dizia comigo mesmo: Certamente não há temor de Deus neste lugar, e eles me matarão por causa de minha mulher. 12 Por outro lado, ela, de fato, é também minha irmã, filha de meu pai e não de minha mãe; e veio a ser minha mulher. 13 Quando Deus me fez andar errante da casa de meu pai, eu disse a ela: Este favor me farás: em todo lugar em que entrarmos, dirás a meu respeito: Ele é meu irmão. 14 Então, Abimeleque tomou ovelhas e bois, e servos e servas e os deu a Abraão; e lhe restituiu a Sara, sua mulher. 15 Disse Abimeleque: A minha terra está diante de ti; habita onde melhor te parecer. 16 E a Sara disse: Dei mil siclos de prata a teu irmão; será isto compensação por tudo quanto se deu contigo; e perante todos estás justificada. 17 E, orando Abraão, sarou Deus Abimeleque, sua mulher e suas servas, de sorte que elas pudessem ter filhos; 18 porque o SENHOR havia tornado estéreis todas as mulheres da casa de Abimeleque, por causa de Sara, mulher de Abraão. 20 And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar. 2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah. 3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife. 4 But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation? 5 Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this. 6 And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her. 7 Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine. 8 Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid. 9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done. 10 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing? 11 And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake. 12 And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. 13 And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother. 14 And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife. 15 And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee. 16 And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved. 17 So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children. 18 For the Lord had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife. ..... ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦  ..... ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦  Mateus 19 1 E aconteceu que, concluindo Jesus estas palavras, deixou a Galiléia e foi para o território da Judéia, além do Jordão. 2 Seguiram-no muitas multidões, e curou-as ali. 3 Vieram a ele alguns fariseus e o experimentavam, perguntando: É lícito ao marido repudiar a sua mulher por qualquer motivo? 4 Então, respondeu ele: Não tendes lido que o Criador, desde o princípio, os fez homem e mulher 5 e que disse: Por esta causa deixará o homem pai e mãe e se unirá a sua mulher, tornando-se os dois uma só carne? 6 De modo que já não são mais dois, porém uma só carne. Portanto, o que Deus ajuntou não o separe o homem. 7 Replicaram-lhe: Por que mandou, então, Moisés dar carta de divórcio e repudiar? 8 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Por causa da dureza do vosso coração é que Moisés vos permitiu repudiar vossa mulher; entretanto, não foi assim desde o princípio. 9 Eu, porém, vos digo: quem repudiar sua mulher, não sendo por causa de relações sexuais ilícitas, e casar com outra comete adultério [e o que casar com a repudiada comete adultério]. 10 Disseram-lhe os discípulos: Se essa é a condição do homem relativamente à sua mulher, não convém casar. 11 Jesus, porém, lhes respondeu: Nem todos são aptos para receber este conceito, mas apenas aqueles a quem é dado. 12 Porque há eunucos de nascença; há outros a quem os homens fizeram tais; e há outros que a si mesmos se fizeram eunucos, por causa do reino dos céus. Quem é apto para o admitir admita. 13 Trouxeram-lhe, então, algumas crianças, para que lhes impusesse as mãos e orasse; mas os discípulos os repreendiam. 14 Jesus, porém, disse: Deixai os pequeninos, não os embaraceis de vir a mim, porque dos tais é o reino dos céus. 15 E, tendo-lhes imposto as mãos, retirou-se dali. 16 E eis que alguém, aproximando-se, lhe perguntou: Mestre, que farei eu de bom, para alcançar a vida eterna? 17 Respondeu-lhe Jesus: Por que me perguntas acerca do que é bom? Bom só existe um. Se queres, porém, entrar na vida, guarda os mandamentos. 18 E ele lhe perguntou: Quais? Respondeu Jesus: Não matarás, não adulterarás, não furtarás, não dirás falso testemunho; 19 honra a teu pai e a tua mãe e amarás o teu próximo como a ti mesmo. 20 Replicou-lhe o jovem: Tudo isso tenho observado; que me falta ainda? 21 Disse-lhe Jesus: Se queres ser perfeito, vai, vende os teus bens, dá aos pobres e terás um tesouro no céu; depois, vem e segue-me. 22 Tendo, porém, o jovem ouvido esta palavra, retirou-se triste, por ser dono de muitas propriedades. 23 Então, disse Jesus a seus discípulos: Em verdade vos digo que um rico dificilmente entrará no reino dos céus. 24 E ainda vos digo que é mais fácil passar um camelo pelo fundo de uma agulha do que entrar um rico no reino de Deus. 25 Ouvindo isto, os discípulos ficaram grandemente maravilhados e disseram: Sendo assim, quem pode ser salvo? 26 Jesus, fitando neles o olhar, disse-lhes: Isto é impossível aos homens, mas para Deus tudo é possível. 27 Então, lhe falou Pedro: Eis que nós tudo deixamos e te seguimos; que será, pois, de nós? 28 Jesus lhes respondeu: Em verdade vos digo que vós, os que me seguistes, quando, na regeneração, o Filho do Homem se assentar no trono da sua glória, também vos assentareis em doze tronos para julgar as doze tribos de Israel. 29 E todo aquele que tiver deixado casas, ou irmãos, ou irmãs, ou pai, ou mãe [ou mulher], ou filhos, ou campos, por causa do meu nome, receberá muitas vezes mais e herdará a vida eterna. 30 Porém muitos primeiros serão últimos; e os últimos, primeiros. 19 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan; 2 And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there. 3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? 4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, 5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. 7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? 8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. 10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. 11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given. 12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it. 13 Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. 15 And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence. 16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. 18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? 21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. 23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. 24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 25 When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? 26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. 27 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? 28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life. 30 But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first. ..... ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦  ..... ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦  Neemias 9 1 No dia vinte e quatro deste mês, se ajuntaram os filhos de Israel com jejum e pano de saco e traziam terra sobre si. 2 Os da linhagem de Israel se apartaram de todos os estranhos, puseram-se em pé e fizeram confissão dos seus pecados e das iniqüidades de seus pais. 3 Levantando-se no seu lugar, leram no Livro da Lei do SENHOR, seu Deus, uma quarta parte do dia; em outra quarta parte dele fizeram confissão e adoraram o SENHOR, seu Deus. 4 Jesua, Bani, Cadmiel, Sebanias, Buni, Serebias, Bani e Quenani se puseram em pé no estrado dos levitas e clamaram em alta voz ao SENHOR, seu Deus. 5 Os levitas Jesua, Cadmiel, Bani, Hasabnéias, Serebias, Hodias, Sebanias e Petaías disseram: Levantai-vos, bendizei ao SENHOR, vosso Deus, de eternidade em eternidade. Então, se disse: Bendito seja o nome da tua glória, que ultrapassa todo bendizer e louvor. 6 Só tu és SENHOR, tu fizeste o céu, o céu dos céus e todo o seu exército, a terra e tudo quanto nela há, os mares e tudo quanto há neles; e tu os preservas a todos com vida, e o exército dos céus te adora. 7 Tu és o SENHOR, o Deus que elegeste Abrão, e o tiraste de Ur dos caldeus, e lhe puseste por nome Abraão. 8 Achaste o seu coração fiel perante ti e com ele fizeste aliança, para dares à sua descendência a terra dos cananeus, dos heteus, dos amorreus, dos ferezeus, dos jebuseus e dos girgaseus; e cumpriste as tuas promessas, porquanto és justo. 9 Viste a aflição de nossos pais no Egito, e lhes ouviste o clamor junto ao mar Vermelho. 10 Fizeste sinais e milagres contra Faraó e seus servos e contra todo o povo da sua terra, porque soubeste que os trataram com soberba; e, assim, adquiriste renome, como hoje se vê. 11 Dividiste o mar perante eles, de maneira que o atravessaram em seco; lançaste os seus perseguidores nas profundezas, como uma pedra nas águas impetuosas. 12 Guiaste-os, de dia, por uma coluna de nuvem e, de noite, por uma coluna de fogo, para lhes alumiar o caminho por onde haviam de ir. 13 Desceste sobre o monte Sinai, do céu falaste com eles e lhes deste juízos retos, leis verdadeiras, estatutos e mandamentos bons. 14 O teu santo sábado lhes fizeste conhecer; preceitos, estatutos e lei, por intermédio de Moisés, teu servo, lhes mandaste. 15 Pão dos céus lhes deste na sua fome e água da rocha lhes fizeste brotar na sua sede; e lhes disseste que entrassem para possuírem a terra que, com mão levantada, lhes juraste dar. 16 Porém eles, nossos pais, se houveram soberbamente, e endureceram a sua cerviz, e não deram ouvidos aos teus mandamentos. 17 Recusaram ouvir-te e não se lembraram das tuas maravilhas, que lhes fizeste; endureceram a sua cerviz e na sua rebelião levantaram um chefe, com o propósito de voltarem para a sua servidão no Egito. Porém tu, ó Deus perdoador, clemente e misericordioso, tardio em irar-te e grande em bondade, tu não os desamparaste, 18 ainda mesmo quando fizeram para si um bezerro de fundição e disseram: Este é o teu Deus, que te tirou do Egito; e cometeram grandes blasfêmias. 19 Todavia, tu, pela multidão das tuas misericórdias, não os deixaste no deserto. A coluna de nuvem nunca se apartou deles de dia, para os guiar pelo caminho, nem a coluna de fogo de noite, para lhes alumiar o caminho por onde haviam de ir. 20 E lhes concedeste o teu bom Espírito, para os ensinar; não lhes negaste para a boca o teu maná; e água lhes deste na sua sede. 21 Desse modo os sustentaste quarenta anos no deserto, e nada lhes faltou; as suas vestes não envelheceram, e os seus pés não se incharam. 22 Também lhes deste reinos e povos, que lhes repartiste em porções; assim, possuíram a terra de Seom, a saber, a terra do rei de Hesbom e a terra de Ogue, rei de Basã. 23 Multiplicaste os seus filhos como as estrelas do céu e trouxeste-os à terra de que tinhas dito a seus pais que nela entrariam para a possuírem. 24 Entraram os filhos e tomaram posse da terra; abateste perante eles os moradores da terra, os cananeus, e lhos entregaste nas mãos, como também os reis e os povos da terra, para fazerem deles segundo a sua vontade. 25 Tomaram cidades fortificadas e terra fértil e possuíram casas cheias de toda sorte de coisas boas, cisternas cavadas, vinhas e olivais e árvores frutíferas em abundância; comeram, e se fartaram, e engordaram, e viveram em delícias, pela tua grande bondade. 26 Ainda assim foram desobedientes e se revoltaram contra ti; viraram as costas à tua lei e mataram os teus profetas, que protestavam contra eles, para os fazerem voltar a ti; e cometeram grandes blasfêmias. 27 Pelo que os entregaste nas mãos dos seus opressores, que os angustiaram; mas no tempo de sua angústia, clamando eles a ti, dos céus tu os ouviste; e, segundo a tua grande misericórdia, lhes deste libertadores que os salvaram das mãos dos que os oprimiam. 28 Porém, quando se viam em descanso, tornavam a fazer o mal diante de ti; e tu os desamparavas nas mãos dos seus inimigos, para que dominassem sobre eles; mas, convertendo-se eles e clamando a ti, tu os ouviste dos céus e, segundo a tua misericórdia, os livraste muitas vezes. 29 Testemunhaste contra eles, para que voltassem à tua lei; porém eles se houveram soberbamente e não deram ouvidos aos teus mandamentos, mas pecaram contra os teus juízos, pelo cumprimento dos quais o homem viverá; obstinadamente deram de ombros, endureceram a cerviz e não quiseram ouvir. 30 No entanto, os aturaste por muitos anos e testemunhaste contra eles pelo teu Espírito, por intermédio dos teus profetas; porém eles não deram ouvidos; pelo que os entregaste nas mãos dos povos de outras terras. 31 Mas, pela tua grande misericórdia, não acabaste com eles nem os desamparaste; porque tu és Deus clemente e misericordioso. 32 Agora, pois, ó Deus nosso, ó Deus grande, poderoso e temível, que guardas a aliança e a misericórdia, não menosprezes toda a aflição que nos sobreveio, a nós, aos nossos reis, aos nossos príncipes, aos nossos sacerdotes, aos nossos profetas, aos nossos pais e a todo o teu povo, desde os dias dos reis da Assíria até ao dia de hoje. 33 Porque tu és justo em tudo quanto tem vindo sobre nós; pois tu fielmente procedeste, e nós, perversamente. 34 Os nossos reis, os nossos príncipes, os nossos sacerdotes e os nossos pais não guardaram a tua lei, nem deram ouvidos aos teus mandamentos e aos teus testemunhos, que testificaste contra eles. 35 Pois eles no seu reino, na muita abundância de bens que lhes deste, na terra espaçosa e fértil que puseste diante deles não te serviram, nem se converteram de suas más obras. 36 Eis que hoje somos servos; e até na terra que deste a nossos pais, para comerem o seu fruto e o seu bem, eis que somos servos nela. 37 Seus abundantes produtos são para os reis que puseste sobre nós por causa dos nossos pecados; e, segundo a sua vontade, dominam sobre o nosso corpo e sobre o nosso gado; estamos em grande angústia. 38 Por causa de tudo isso, estabelecemos aliança fiel e o escrevemos; e selaram-na os nossos príncipes, os nossos levitas e os nossos sacerdotes. 9 Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them. 2 And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers. 3 And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the Lord their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the Lord their God. 4 Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto the Lord their God. 5 Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the Lord your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise. 6 Thou, even thou, art Lord alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee. 7 Thou art the Lord the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham; 8 And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous: 9 And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardest their cry by the Red sea; 10 And shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them. So didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day. 11 And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters. 12 Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go. 13 Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments: 14 And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant: 15 And gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and promisedst them that they should go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them. 16 But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments, 17 And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not. 18 Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This is thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations; 19 Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go. 20 Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst. 21 Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not. 22 Moreover thou gavest them kingdoms and nations, and didst divide them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan. 23 Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it. 24 So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would. 25 And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, wells digged, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness. 26 Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations. 27 Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies. 28 But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the land of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies; 29 And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear. 30 Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands. 31 Nevertheless for thy great mercies' sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God. 32 Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day. 33 Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly: 34 Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them. 35 For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works. 36 Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it: 37 And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress. 38 And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it;
